Eating disorders are a widespread problem among young people.
In Italy about 3 milion of young people suffer from eating disorders (Dca): 95,9% are women and 4,!% are men. The number of deaths for anorexia nervosa fluctuates between 5,86% and 6,2%, that for bulimia nervosa between 1,57% to 1,93% and that for other dosorders between 1,81% and 1,92%.
According to the Ministry of Health there are 102 new anorexia nervosa cases every 102.000 inhabitants and 432 new bulimia nervosa cases. Bulimia nervosa cases are 5% and all other eating disorders are 6%.
Adi, The Italian Association of clinical Dietetic Science and Nutrition, underlines that these problems are often cause of death and if they are not diagnosed in time and nursed in an appropriate way, they can become chronic with very high costs for the individual, the family and the society.
"Eating disorders are complex and insidious diseases of the psychic sphere with severe repercussions on the nutritional status which are charcterized by body-image, weight and food obsession"specifies Massimo Vincenzi, council member of Adi Foundation and coordinator of the group of Eating Disorders of Adi. "As they are connected with the psychic sphere, one of the most worrying aspects is linked to the early identification of these diseases which need complex treatments and transdisciplinary work".
