L-Carnitine transports fatty acids to the mitochondria, where they are degraded, producing energy in the process. Carnitine therefore plays a fundamental role in lipid catabolism.
Carnitine is a molecule that is naturally produced by our bodies using lysine, it is also present in animal-based food products and controls many bodily functions. One of the main dietary sources of carnitine is meat, which contains 0.1% (so to get 3g of carnitine you would need to eat 3kg of meat). It is especially concentrated in the muscles, including the heart.
WHAT DOES CARNITINE DO?
L-Carnitine transports fatty acids to the mitochondria, where they are degraded, producing energy in the process. Carnitine therefore plays a fundamental role in lipid catabolism. Carnitine plays a role in fat metabolism as it transports acyl groups (RCO) to the mitochondria, where beta oxidation takes place (the same function cannot be performed by acetylcarnitine as it is already occupied by the acyl acetyl group), drawing in energy in the process (Siliprandi, Biochemistry Medica, 380).
CARNITINE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Carbohydrates and fatty acids are the primary sources of energy for our body.
Even though the energy efficiency of carbohydrates is decidedly greater than that of fats, carnitine is also very important, playing a fundamental role in the formation of said energy by transporting fatty acids to the mitochondria. When practicing endurance sports, the energy provided by fats plays a decisive role, as stocks of muscle glycogen are consumed, while fat is a practically inexhaustible source of energy.
Several studies show that carnitine can facilitate the conversion of fat into energy when taken during prolonged physical exercise.
CARNITINE AND YOUR DIET
Thanks to its ability to convert fat into energy, carnitine is also used for weight loss and slimming diets.
CARNITINE AND YOUR HEART
Lipids are an important source of energy for the heart.
L-Carnitine aids the functioning of the heart as it is essential for normal beta-fatty acid oxidation. The strength of the heart’s contractions appears to improve when reinforced by the presence of carnitine.
