Vitamins, taken regularly with food, are essential for health. They are normally required in small quantities to satisfy the needs of the organism in which they regulate a number of metabolic reactions as enzymes. The lack of vitamins may depend on an insufficient assumption of vitamins with the diet, an increased demand, as it happens, for example, during pregnancy, in sport activity or by the presence of intestinal alterations that prevent their absorption, as in the case of some diseases or chronic alcoholism.
Minerals are inorganic substances that, even if they represent just the 6.2% of the total body weight, they take part in essential functions for human life: in fact they take part in cellular processes such as the formation of teeth and bones, are involved in the regulation of hydrosaline balance, in the activation of several metabolic pathways and are key factors in the growth and development of tissues and organs. Unlike carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, minerals do not provide energy directly, but their presence allows just those reactions that release the energy that we need. The human being is not able to synthesize any minerals indipendently: the salts are assimilated through the water and foods, or as condiment added to food, such as cooking salt. Compared to other vital substances (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates in particular), the daily requirement of minerals is minimal. But, since they are continuously removed by sweat, urine and feces, they have to be consumed with a proper and balanced diet.
Carotenoids are substances similar to vitamin A, present in vegetables and colored fruit, which have a powerful antioxidant protective effect in respect of potentially harmful free radicals, which are formed in the course of diseases or during intense workouts. They play an important role in the mechanism of vision and protection of the retina. These include beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein.
Coenzyme Q10, analogue of vitamin K2, takes part in cellular energy processes as vehicle in the respiratory chain between flavoproteins and cytochromes. It is particularly important in myocardial cells and a deficiency** could determine a deterioration of energy processes (lower production of ATP) associated with cardiovascular diseases. For its antioxidant and membrane stabilizing properties it may contrast the aging of the body caused by free radicals caused by environmental pollution, intense physical activity, smoking, prolonged sun exposure.
